Trying to value some minis, don't know where to start

Hi Bartertown!

I recently was given a set of W40k Space Wolves miniatures, hand-painted by a friend years ago and given to me to try and sell online. I agreed to the task, then turned to the internet hoping to find resources to help me identify and value the miniatures. Needless to say, I am having a difficult time finding those resources. Only some of the models have any sort of identification on the bottom, and finding a comprehensive model list has entirely eluded me. I can't even find a good resource to identify them visually! So I figured this was a good place to ask for help - as a total newbie who has little knowledge of W40K, how do I go about identifying and valuing these models?

Thanks for your advice!

-McMouse

EDIT: Guess this might help. Here's an album of the minis, books, etc.

My first thing is to wonder why your friend didn't provide you with any descriptions. Surely, he'd remember SOMETHING.

With those pics, the best I can say is, "Yep. You've got 40K models." LOL
Looks like you've probably got some Wolf Scouts in there (last pic), some Terminators (the guys that tower over the rest), a tech Priest (the mechanical arm on the backpack), a servitor (the one that looks out of place - mostly flesh with some robotics), some generic SW marine equivalents (front right and left on pic #2).
That's about the best I can give you with these pics, though.

Thanks for the input mate. I'll get handy with the camera and try and have some better pictures (of each individual fig?) up asap.

EDIT: And I get the sense that my friend never did much playing - despite the books I think he mostly did painting. He may have even gotten the models themselves secondhand. I'll see if he can give me any more info though.

Look on Stuff of Legends..

Here is a link to some SW models..
http://solegends.com/citcat9x3/index.htm

Taking a look at the models, you definitely have an Iron Priest in there, and some of the older Metal Wolf Scouts.

As for value, eh.. the older metals are actually less valuable than the current plastics, I am finding..

However, those books may have some decent value.. maybe. Not the WD though.. I think you might get a buck each on those if you are lucky.

The only book you might be able to sell would be the wargear, and that's only if a specific collector or player wants it.
The other books are really ignored. I have alot like them and several copies of each and can't get $5 each for any.
The minis have really poor paint jobs. The paint lookks thick & heavy.
They'd be easier to sell stripped. You'd definately get a little more for them.
I hate to say it, but $1 a piece is what I'd expect you to be offered as is, maybe less because they need stripping.

The plastic models will go for a buck to two each, as-is.
The Metal Terminators (models with this armor and ANY weapon mix: http://imgur.com/M1GtO) will get $3 to $4 EASILY. If you strip the paint, you could double that with ease.

BTW, #15 is a Servitor, too

A good idea is to get names for what everything is, then research it on the GW site to find out what it goes for at RETAIL value. Start your asking price at half of that for the plastic stuff and 60% for the metal. Then, be willing to negotiate on your pricing. Strip it and you can probably get the 60% of retail.

Thanks for the pricing advice - do you have any suggestions as to the best/easiest way to strip the minis of paint?

there is a how to here on the forum..somewhere.
Pinesol works on metal, melts plastic.
simple green works slower on both.
purple power the same. plastic safe.
can get all at walmart.

do it ouside since the fums are strong..even the pinesol.

Simple Green and Purple Power (in that order) get the best reviews. There IS a bit of "elbow grease" involved, though.
I don't recall if Purple Power does, but they say Simple green works on plastic, too. So...

Make sure you wear gloves and watch the disposal instructions CAREFULLY.

Good news! I've got loads of Simple Green. Soak it for a while, then have at 'em with a q-tip?

old toothbrush. you can get cheap, hard toothbrushes at dollar stores usually. usually several in a pack for $1.

on metal/lead you can use a bronze brush. you can get those for $2-3 at home supply stores.

you'll need to scrub the minis and then re-soak them. I got a fine metal filter, to strain the chunks and then reuse the solvent.
also to catch an small parts that that fall off from the glue giving out. super glue usually gives out. plastic cement doesn't.

i scrub them under running hot/warm water. ALWAYS keep the strainer in the sink. also the paint bits/chips will stick to a sink, no matter the surface. make sure you clean it afterwards; otherwise you'll have a wife/so/gf/parent mad at you.

Great advice, thanks. Y'all have been really helpful!
