Why are the MERP books so damn expensive?

Are these available anywhere as cheap/free downloads from fansites or something?

I can't figure it out either, I keep looking but just can't fathom paying the prices people are asking for them.

$25, $80, $200+ for books on Ebay. Just nuts!

There are fansites with free downloads for Marvel Superheroes & other games- I thought maybe there was something like that around for MERP.

Wow, I had no idea they were so pricey.

I guess it's the Out of Print factor plus the fact that they really were well-researched books on Tolkien's work.

I'm quite sure there is NO legal way to download them - ICE lost the license when they filed for bankruptcy/reorganization years back, and no one else has had the license from Tolkien Enterprises. (The Lord of the Rings RPG from Decipher was movies-only, and that licensor is not Tolkien Enterprises, IIRC. So the rights to those books are in the hands of Tolkien Enterprises and I'm sure they don't have any interest in reprinting them/reselling them/etc.

(Not that any one should take their lack of interest as a reason to go hunting for torrents - they own it, it's their right not to have it stolen by torrent pirates, too)

In any case the prices they are demanding makes me want to go see what duplicate books I have. Wow.

Uh....because they are OOP, and have been for over 10 years?

There was a disc on Ebay that had all the PDFS- I should have bought it.

Thanks for that nugget of wisdom Ironhide- - so has Keep on the Borderlands and other D&D stuff- but it isnt $250.

That D&D stuff had MUCH larger print runs than anything ICE ever made.

Shame. Its good stuff. But Im not paying those prices- there must be pdfs/discs somewhere.

So long as you realize that those are illegal copies, I'm sure there are.

Marvel has fan sites with free downloads. MERP doesnt? That sucks- the books have been out of print 20 years.
