They are unfortuneatly not up to date.
I myself have just started a Black Templar force and have found them to be fairly restrictive, but at the same time they have some unique freedoms that are not offered in the other armies.
Vows: there is essentially only 1 (possibly 2) vows that are actually of any use consistantly.
The most commonly taken vow of preffered emeny makes you army a serious hand to hand monster against troops
The vow that increases the strength makes your initiates a terror against vehicles and other normally untouchable critters.
There is a serious lack of heavy weapons in the army. I've taken to fill my elite slots with dreadnoughts geared up with heavy weapons to pop those vehicles and allowing my initiate squads to do their job of carving up infantry.
BT's are one of the few armies that can still get 5 Terminators with 2 special weapons, and I often times take advantage of that with surgical strike units such as a dual Hvy Flamer unit.
Many times your heavy slots are going to simply be filled with Crusaders as they can provide enough transportation capacity and still allowing your army to be more mobile compared to the standard LR while having more firepower than a rhino.

I love my templar army.

The chaplains are cc monsters and theres just something about putting down several 20man squads down ,and the looks you get for telling someone,go on,shoot me please, just kill one.

Assault squads with shields and pw fists are great aswell.

Templars actually do quite well in 5th Edition, despite being a 4th Edition codex. Their special rules are worded loosely enough that you can get away with various shenanigans if you want to. Righteous Zeal (IIRC) for example, is worded to allow you to move up to the rolled value, so you can move 0" and still be within the rules-as-written. You might get a frown from your opponent for doing so, of course ;).

Wound Allocation rules help out Templars a lot these days, and their still-awesome characters can survive some serious beatings in close combat due to Adamantine Mantles and whatnot.

They're certainly more competitive than Dark Angels are...

That is just evil, I have so many times had my ork playing friends actually fire on me to make sure I was closer. There was more than a few times that I rolled 1" to far, which is why I tend to pay for crusader seals to help me roll what I need instead of what they need.

They have a new codex coming out soon. So it should be fine in a little while.

I don't really think there is much that needs changed for them, other than a few points costs,,,,,,,lord I hope they don't screw them,or I swear by the emperors underwear Ill go chaos.,or theres going to be a bunch of new black and white clad dudes workin for the greater good.

Really though to the question at hand,,,,,the BT are a great army, but like any,if you go for cheese you may not enjoy them,if its for a competitive and fun army with tons of conversion and scratch building possibilities.

So this is what I was told is the order of the new codex's for 40k.

Daemon hunters
Black Templars
Necrons.

Daemon hunters are supposed to be out by around March,

Black Templars in the Summer hopefully by July.

Necrons by around October of next year.

Not sure about the Necrons though, but the others I am pretty sure of.

What is really funny is that I have a Chaos SM army that I play, A tau Army that I play, and I decided to finally put my SM's together as a BT crusade... Please do not jinx it all by telling my I'm going back to my CSM and TAU now that I'm having fun with loyalists
