whats up guys.
hey, what you do think about drop pods. i'm thinking about trying to use them. but i not want to use a whole drop pod army. i dont like the fact that they are unreliable, when they arrive and roll for which squad comes out. i still love my trusty rhino i know when he's going arrive and i like the work he does. so my question i'm thinking about 1 maybe 2 pods. drop 1 pod on the frist turn being a ven. dread or some pretty tough. casue a lil chaos on your side as the rest of my wolves move in.
so... Is this line of strategy worth the $$$ investment?

pods are ok....
a all pod army really aint that great just because the dudes tend to get shot or assaulted right away once they pop out.
a reg dred with Hflamer and multimelta in a pod that has a missile launcher is a good buy but make sure u try and take odd numbers of pods so you can get them at better times.
so like 2 pods with dreds on first turn and a pod with either a small wolf guard (not termies!) unit or a grey hunter unit to take objectives turn 3-5 (average is turn 3 realistically) is a good build.
but it also depends on what else youre using... if you are doing a sw army thats pritty much pure Thunder pups a dred in a pod is a great thing to get people to shoot at while the pups get closer, while a 3x longfang, and grey hunters in Rhazorback army really doesnt need them and would prefer to take the dreds as rifle man (dual auto cannons)
anyway hope that helps

They can be really usefull because as others have said, chaos in the enemy ranks can be a good thing. Forcing the enemy to split their fire or even concentrate all of their fire on the pod/unit in it can allow your rhinos a lot more time to close with the enemy. This can be especially good against gaurd armies as the deathwing can decimate the massed units and slaughter them in close combat if not destroyed. Against gaurd "tank armies" the fire that is split is even more important as there is less of it to split.
It does not even have to be a big investment. I have seen people use templates and foamboard to make nice looking ones. I have also see VERY nice ones using pvc pipe caps for $8.00.
I say try them out for a few games with proxies and see for yourself how they match your playstyle. If you like how they perform, then buy/build/convert a few.

You have to roll to see which squad comes out of each drop pod???? Where is that written?

I think he means something like how you have to roll for each unit to see if it becomes available.
@op: you get 1/2 rounded up of the pods to come in turn 1. Period. Then on round 2 any left get rolled for as reserves and become available in that way. You don't roll for the pod and place / scatter it then randomize which squad/ model it is you say "and for this squad *roll a die* I got a X" ect so you know which model/ unit it is before deployment.
It is the exact same as in the marine book.

It's really easy to use Drop pods
Make sure to buy them in odd numbers, that way the better side of half shows up first turn (1 = 1 first turn, 3 = 2 first turn)
Then you use a common tactic (at least around here) and you put assault squads (minus Jetpacks) with twin flamers, and Vulkan.
Make sure those pods come down together in the middle of the infantry formation
Everyone pops out, 3-5 twin-linking flamers (2 in assault squads + Vulkans flamer)+ all the bolt pistol shots on 1-2 units puts a hurt on just about anyone's army.
If you do it right and hit a weak flank they will have a hard time doubling back to take out those troops while still worrying about the rest of your army
Other common tactic around here is to fill a single pod full of sternguard and the guy who makes them scoring, plop them down on top of an objective marker and let them come to you all the while nailing them with specialized ammo
