There used to be the mini Codex Assassins but now the only rules for them that I know of are in the Witchhunters Codex and I think the Deamonhunters Codex. Both of which are rumored to be being redone soon. The last rumor I heard was that the specific types of assassins were going away with a more generic form replacing them. I'm sure you could still use the minis but the type specific rules may be going away in the next codex revamp. Take all of that with a grain of internet rumor salt of course.

I would recommend that you wander over to Bell of Lost Souls or Chainfist and read mkerr's Tacticae on using assassins.
Though not everyone agrees with his reading of the rules, the essential points he makes are very strong. They will help you determine the value of each of the temples.

go to 'yes the truth hurts' and ask stelek, he is much better at really good list design then at bols which is more of a fluff army creative environment.
if you decide to use assassins you must use a inquisitor if its not in the daemonhunter or witch hunter lists. this is
ok because of the old 'hood and henchmen with an old auspex but a 100 point assassin and a inquisitor can easily come out to being over 200points.... not so good.
the vindicare is really good for hitting the sarge, the evisor is cool except if u play against anything with defensive grenades but it is really cheap and kills stuff, the chick one is probably the best just because u can kill 3+save termies but is also the most expensive, im not sure about the anti librarian one just because it doesn't do a lot against a random army.
id say if your just starting out and u are not playing DH or WH just put them in your case and take an extra squad or two of basic troops.

The two that I see used the most often are the vindicare and callidus.
Which army do you use? Marines, Witch hu8nters, imperial gaurd or daemon hunters?
Regardless of what army you are using, you need to have an actual inquisitor to use them. That means using a "hunters" list and using an inquisitor in it (the elite inq choice counts) or if you are using a marine or gaurd, you will need to use either an inq hq or inq elite.
Myself, i play gaurd (since getting it painted) and like to use the daemon hunter inq with the emporors tarot (to make more likely to get first turn) and the callidus. That gives me a fair chance of bunching up an enemy unit in the open for my battle cannons or turn an enemy tank about to show my las cannons their juicy rear armor (that just sounds bad lol).
caluxes I understand are not that hot unless facing or using lots of psychers and everser might be ok against "hordey" type armies but overall, I personally feel vindicare and callidus are the way to go.
As a side note, vindicares are handy if your going into a tourney where you know you will get extra points for killing enemy hq as they can pick them out of units. Havnt ndone it myself, but saw someone who did with success.
Even if you dont use them, they are nice models and will be around if you want to do something different someday.
Edit: I came in 2nd in a tourney yesterday. One of my marine opponants was shocked to see the callidus wipe through his thunderhammer/storm shield squad "What do you mean it ignores invulnerable saves too?!?!". Priceless.

No, you will have to take a Inquisitor from the HQ slot. The assassin will take up the Elite slot. If you decide to go this route take the minimum for the inquisitor to keep the points down, but make sure you take 2 mystics. Mystics are nice.

My bad, Your right Ironhide, you do need to take an hq inquisitor as you can only take one elites. Never bothered to check that as I went for the hq one anyway.
I usually go for 2 mystics, 3 servitors (2 heavy bolter and 1 plasma cannon and just give the Inq the emporors tarot (for getting first turn) and the callidus.
The inq and his team can pour out a lot of firepower at bs4 (needed when supporting a gaurd army), and can shoot at deep strikers/teleporters if they come to near before they get to shoot at you. The plasma cannon especially loves that as the deep strikers are all bunched together. Getting first turn also helps with the callidus's ability for the free shot at a full bunched unit/rear armor.
You Do need to be carefull because as Ironhide points out, it is VERY easy to suck up a lot of points on the inquisitor and forget that the only reason you even got him was to get the assassin and not have enough points to flesh out your army itself. I have made that mistake a few times and learned from it (after 2 or 3 times

).

Absolutely for the Callidus, the other 3 are effective for their points cost, but take up a valuable elites slot.

Some are better vs. some armies, but not as much vs. others. I heard the Cullexus psychic Assassin is good vs. Tyranids & Eldar because his powers are based on the number of Psychers faced.

I've heard of gaurd players using the culluxes and keeping a full unit of psychers near it in order to give a +9 to the assault value of it's gun which makes it's gun a heavy hitter at bs 5 heavy bolter strength and ap1. I dont like to rely on combos like that though and like starslayer said, unless your facing an army with psychers, your wasting a lot of it's abilities.
As a side note, I have never had any issues with using "proxy" models for the callidus. It uses polymorphine so can look like anything. Tourneys I have been in has had no issue with me not using the "official" model so long as it is well painted and is wysiwyg. Of course, I would check with opponants and tourney runners beforehand if you try that.

Think about that EVIL, not only are you paying the points for an inquisitor and the culuxes assassin, but you're also pay X amount of points on a psyker squad just to make the culuxes that much better. Waste of points. Just use the culuxes when you play against Eldar and Nids. Callidus or Eversor are the best for guard.

Just don't take the assassins. Not worth points because in a random game (were u don't know what list u are playing against) then the assassins either do or don't do anything vrs the armies. Better options in ur own dex for less points.

LOL, Ironhide, I didnt say I used that combo, just that I had seen others claim how cool it was (on warseer

). Personally, I agree with you. Too many points and too many factors to consider and just sounds a pain in the rear to try what ammounts to a one trick pony. I dont use the culuxxes in any game.
I still gotta say the callidus is the best for the points as it works against any opponant. Even if she doesnt do a lot herself (which she easily can) but also in the disruption of your opponant's plans/giving juicy targets to your own units to shoot at. She works WITH your army rather then alongside it. Even if she doesnt kill something herself, she can save other units of yours (for example, I remember forcing an opponant's dev squad to a spot where they could see anything and made them lose a full turn of shooting) and in the case of giving your army juicy targets, I remember putting an enemy unit in the wide open closely bunched together to get totally wiped out by my first batle cannon shot).
