Just a neutral observation - that may be your ruling, but it's not THE ruling. As I noted earlier, there is no official ruling because every TO gets to make his own rules up. In my experience however:

1) Just about every tournament is fine with your purple & green Warhamster chapter using the Spacewolf codex as it's rulebase.

2) It's about a 50/50 split on whether you can use your red Blood Angels as vanilla SM, or play your blue Ultramarines using the BT Codex... (and very occasionally I've seen the one allowed, and the other not)

Actually, I'd say if anything it's more a 60/40 in favour of allowing you to crossover, but whatever the numbers are, a sizeable number of tournaments fall on either side.

If you want a concrete example where this often comes up in a tournament, it's Ravenwing. I like the Dark Angels, and there is some merit in playing a Deathwing force using that codex (although I'd take termie heavy BT myself). If you wanted a Ravenwing force however, my advice to you would be to use the vanilla SM codex ruleswise, and use a Bike Captain, etc. You lose Sammael (relevant, but not critical) and mixed Speeder/Bike Ravenwings (irrelevant), but you end up with a stronger force overall. This is quite a widespread opinion, and Ravenwing armies are often fielded in tournaments using the SM Codex. Fluff oriented players tend to stick with 'their' codex whatever, and tactical oriented players tend to use whatever best fits it, although obviously that's a sweeping generalisation.

You're right.

One thing to keep in mind - which certain individuals seem to have failed to realize - is that the OP asked for opinions, and (AFAIK), nobody who told him "no" told him it as a "rule." Only as an opinion.

Good observation and VERY relevant comparison with the Ravenwing, BTW.

Yes, it seems many here have forgotten that the OP asked for opinions. As I have pointed out many times, they are his models and he should be free to do with them as he likes. It is up to his opponents whether or not they are willing to accept his using models that have wold tails and wolf skulls as a "werewolf" army using the blood angel rules.
Personally, my opinion is that if they say no, he is better off cutting those people out of his gaming group.

The OP never said he wanted to run a "Werewolf" army that was YOUR suggestion and you are NOT the OP.

So, PLEASE, leave it alone.

No one said it was his idea. It was an idea that a few others put forth to help him out with fluff.
The end result is, they are his models and he should be able to paint them as he chooses and use whatever army list he wishes so long as he maintains wysiwyg. It is up to his opponents to decide whether to play against him or not. If someone were to deny me a game because I am not using "official" marine models sculpted to match the marine army list I am using, that is an opponent I am happy to not play.
