Such thing as a text/online version of (A)D&D?

I know there are MMORPGs that are similar to D&D, but I'm curious if there is a method for playing D&D via email and/or text?

Basically, I have a 'best' friend living in Oregon, I'm in Northern Colorado, and my cousin is in Southern Colorado - we all would like to play some D&D. I'm the DM and I have plenty of campaign material (I write my own stuff) but I'm unsure of how to proceed via email/text.

Any suggestions?

Use a chat room, or IM/Yahoo/Facebook messenger. Set up a time that is reasonable between the three of you, and go at it. Heck you could even use Skype.

I do not play 4e, so what I'm saying is not meant as anything more than is specifically stated.

I thought I read, during the hype before 4e was brought out, that WotC was introducing tools that would make playing smoother, including something to allow people to play utilizing computers, so that a bunch of people could be in the same room with laptops and all get the same thing from the DM, and soe could even be someplace else.

Did I imagine this?

I remember hearing about this as well. I looked into it, and saw a cost attached to it, and backed off at that point. And looking at their website, I don't see a thing.

That was supposed to be part of D&D Insider, I believe, but they killed it.

There are several online play by post or play by chat websites; rondaks portal, myth weavers and the above named obsidian portal.

I believe all 3 have dice roller programs. I believe that none have a charge to host/gm a game. ALl are the availablity to make the games closed, so only who you want to play can join.

None actaully run the game for you; like a MMO or even NWN...then again that's something else you might want to try. The original NWN allowed you to create an entire game to be played online or at least on a computer.

A computer game that had the builders program to allow you to make a game, that was playable online if you hosted it on your computer; or on you computer if everyone came over to where the computer was/is.

It's not persistant, it's not upgraded and not massively multi player.. so, no it's not eq or wow. it was released as a single player game. So no, it's not like eq or wow...by any means.

All are played on computers.

It would be like saying 40k is like Zombies, since both use minis.

It had/has alot of free download content. There are a couple websites tha have full modules/scenarios/dungeons/adventures, choose you word.

I think I still have a full version. I sold both my books for it; thow to make an adventure and how to play the game, both I think were by Brady games.

Old D&D box set - the one w/the red dragon on the front that came w/a player book, dm book, and six plastic dice and a crayon to color in the numbers - that box set? Hmmm... the 'simplified' rules might just be what we need for a 'play by post' game.
