Thanks Don. I didn't have a chance to dig out my rulebook last night, but I was pretty sure it wasn't possible to force your opponent to assault two different units.
Oh, and the main reason they got rid of the 1" restriction in the assault? People would put units back-to-back with each other in 4th edition, like so but actually touching:
00000
ooooo
Since a 25mm base is just under an inch wide, it made it impossible to get into base-to-base with the front unit without coming within 1" of the back unit and vice versa, which prevented you from assaulting at all. Thankfully, they got rid of that in 5th.

Are you sure on this?MM Wrote:You may avoid contacting the second unit (Lone Wolf) if you wish. Your opponent can't REQUIRE you to multi-charge a unit different than your intended unit. You CAN move withing 1" or END your move within 1" of an enemy model, so long as you are assaulting a different unit.
I think you have to take into consideration the 1" from Non-Assaulted units at end of Move.
I agree that you can move within 1" of non assaulted units, but I don't think you can end your move within 1" of Non-assaulted units. hence the donut ring we were discussing earlier.

I think (and again I find myself without my rulebook) that the 1” barrier is during your Movement and Shooting phases. You cannot move within 1” of an enemy model, except during the assault phase. Otherwise, you could revert back to the 4th ed cheesiness of having two units in base-to-base, one behind the other. Under that interpretation of the rules, you could move to within 1” of the rear unit, so as to get into base with the front unit, but then you’d have to move back a fraction of an inch, because you can’t end your move within 1” of the back unit.
I would say that you can avoid the LW, as nothing in the rules says you have to assault an enemy unit if you’re close to it. Furthermore, I can’t recall it stating anywhere in the rules that you can move within 1” of an enemy unit you’re not assaulting during the assault phase, but that you have to end your movement more than 1” away. It simply says you ignore the 1” rule in an assault.

When i think more about this situation....Since a 25mm base is just under an inch wide, it made it impossible to get into base-to-base with the front unit without coming within 1" of the back unit and vice versa, which prevented you from assaulting at all. Thankfully, they got rid of that in 5th.
I am thinking that the donut MAY NOT happen. If they intentionally wrote the rule to get rid of this situation I would have to say that You MAY be able to END your turn within 1", but only IF you made that move in the ASSAULT phase.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great discussion, I learned about and actually the thread contributed to some tactics I might try out. Not to be too political but I enjoy the fact that we can have civil rules dicussions without anyone slamming others ideas unlike alot of the other sites out there- keep it up!

You shut your face you damn cheese monger!
But seriously, I agree, this was a fairly productive discussion.
Again, I’m going from memory here, but when you do your pile in moves at the end of combat, I think you would have to move any models not in base-to-base with Grey Hunters so that they were at least 1” away from the Lone Wolf. I know for a fact that models piling in cannot move within 1” of an enemy model that’s not locked in their assault, but I’m not 100% on models already within 1”.

My bad.Ironhide wrote:Uh, they're SW. They have counter attack. They get the extra attack anyways.MagickalMemories wrote:It would also be stupid to allow the second unit (Lone Wolf) to be left off of the charge. Better that you charge him than have him charge you and get the extra attack from it.
Eric
"Counter" is a rule I -literally- have never had to deal with in 5e. I was thinking they only got the extra attack if they piled in.
100% certain.Norseman wrote:Are you sure on this?MM Wrote:You may avoid contacting the second unit (Lone Wolf) if you wish. I agree. Not true. You're incorrect.reegsk wrote:But seriously, I agree, this was a fairly productive discussion.

They MAY come within an inch when piling in. For all intents and purposes, models in combat and models that are assaulting ignore the 1" rule.

So they can pile in within 1", as long as they stay out of BtB?

This is great... I really learned a few things on this one.
