Painting Advice - Space Marine chapter

Post by Imaginos »

How would you paint a green/red color scheme without the units looking like Christmas decorations? Any suggestions/thoughts? Consider Salamander green with Blood Angels red for the paints.

The color is completely negotiable at this point. My initial paint scheme was to plan on white power armor with red and black accents, but I was thinking it might be overdone and too close to Blood Ravens. That scheme kind of fit with my Night Crow Chapter background (and name of chapter is not set in stone at this point).

The thing that got me to thinking about going this direction with the chapter actually started in our D&D game, when we came up with a mercenary company called The Company of Crows - with each force being a Murder of Crows. I imagine the slang of the Imperials when my force lands on their planet "trouble is afoot - they sent a Murder of Crows". Yeah, it's cheap, but I liked the way it flowed.

I was playing with the thought of them being a Blood Angels geneseed. The typical brethren are stoic and efficient, taking no pleasure or thrill in meting out the justice and vengeance of the Emperor. The corruption for them comes in play as they start to enjoy the battle and give themselves over to battlelust (death company).

But, then I started wondering about trying them out as Salamanders at some time and was concerned about locking myself into a color scheme that people associate with a particular geneseed. I plan to have extra models for my units so I can swap them out to the appropriate play style - and by no means would it be done just to counter a particular enemy force. Plus, I picked up a couple of Thunderfire Cannons (I like the model) - which aren't available to Blood Angels, and reading about Salamanders, seemed a better fit there.

Which put me in the boat of "what to do with my color scheme if I want to try to have some flexibility in force to field" as well as what to do about my chapter name and concept.

So I'm completely open on the idea of color schemes and chapter names. Keeping in mind my artistic skill is below (sometimes quite a bit below) many of the folks that populate the board. I would like to keep the chapter tied to Crows somehow, just because that was where I started.

Sorry this ramble was so long. Any thoughts or comments?

Why not go to BolterandChainsword.com and use their SM painter?

I would pick one colour or the other to be the main. That's my attempt above, or reverse the red and green.

I concur. Either all red power armor with green for shoulder pad trim and maybe a knee stripe or all green power armor with red for shoulder pad trim and maybe a knee stripe.
