[40k Tyranid] What would you buy with $750?
Okay, let's say you have $750 to spend on Tyranids. Assuming you have none at this time, and aside from the obvious "wait for the codex in January", how would you spend the money? Let's say you are looking to play for fun, not to make an army nobody likes to play against.
Here is my tentative answer on this one, but I know other, more experienced players, will be able to help guide some of these thoughts. I know one issue is that I have too many choices for heavy slots.
Tyranid Codex
3 Battleforces (9 warriors, 24 genestealers, 24 hormagaunts, 24 termagaunts, 3 carnifex)
2 more boxes of gaunts (16 hormagaunts, 16 termagaunts)
1 broodlord
1 tyrant
2 zoanthrope
3 biovore
3 lictors
5 gargoyle blisters (10 total)
3 raveners
Thanks for any thoughts.

More genestealers.
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my underwear!
Buy, sell or trade....it's all the same to me. Lower refs pays/ships first!
Tyrants can not be stopped by earnest words and furrowed brows. Action, strong bold action coming from a position of strength and determination, is the only effective deterrent.

Looks good, I would wait for plastic gargoyles, and save some of the money for a plastic trygon or two
You might want a few different tyrants too (flying etc). I would leave the biovores off too, until they get better models and rules.
Please ship to my by post office, couriers pull all kinds of shenanigans with customs fees

$750 is a lot to spend on any army - have GW prices really gone up that much since I blinked?
If I were getting Nids, I'd only buy plastics to start, no metals whatsoever, as new plastics will arrive soon. I like big models, so at least 3 Battleforces to start, just for the Carnifex models - the troops & the Warriors are great with the bundle discount. That's plenty to stay busy until the new Codex comes out, and the Warriors & Carnifex models can wait a bit depending on new Codex options.
I'd hope for 2 plastic Hive Tyrants, 2 units of Gargoyles, and a couple plastic Malenthorpes / Zoanthrope models, along with a couple Trygons to round things out.

No gargoyles, no biovores and (preference) no 'thropes.
More Genestealers and another Tyrant.
Don't know prices, so I can't help you there.
Gargoyles are horrible MODELS and a horrible UNIT.
Biovores just aren't *that* great. Trust me on this. I'm a convert. LOL
I find Thropes to be too expensive by the time they're worth half a shake.

As before buy no metal.
Also, instead of the extra Gaunts & Stealers, buy more Battleforces.

Re: [40k Tyranid] What would you buy with $750?
A friend of mine has recently revamped his army thanks to the new cover rules. He uses what I call Mini-stealers. They are Hormugants, with the WS upgrade and the S upgrade.
He takes alot of warriors now for synapse becuase of the cover rules and uses deathspitters/BS on them.
Basically his standard tactic is move (using the move to open lanes of fire for his warriors). Shoot with the warriors, run with everything else and closing those holes to grant cover saves. Then possibly charge with the Hormagants cavalry charge.
He has dropped stealers all together becuase he can get far more models on the field for the same points making far more sustainable units. That and Those guants are so cheap you can easily afford to loose 12 gaunts a turn, but stealers are just so expensive that one round of decent bolter fire and they are lost.

For every battle honor, a thousand heroes die alone, unsung and unremembered.

You'll find that you want Wings or something else on your Tyrants, methinks.
There are options that, if you take them, the Tyrant Guard will be worthless.
IMO, drop the T Guard and Thorpes ::Nods @ Ironhids::
Focus on more warriors and get some wings for them and for at least one Tyrant.
Probably won't need more than 1 or 2 Lictors to start, too.

This man needs a Bio-Titan. Actually, skip the Bio-Titan, but if you're going to drop $750 can I assume you will be looking to use this army for Apocalypse? If so you need a Trygon or three. They are nasty with being able to carry broods around the board with them. The rumor is there is a plastic kit coming out with the new codex, so you probably won't have to go the Forgeworld route. And the new codex is confirmed for January.

Re: [40k Tyranid] What would you buy with $750?
If I need a bio-titan, I'll just climb up on the table and be the model myself.
I'm not really dropping cash on this. I have almost $800 worth of Tau, almost all of it NIB w/out shrinkwrap, so I'm basing the retail trade amount on that. Then I am trying to figure out what I want to get to put together a nice Tyranid force.
Why oh why Creeper, are you getting rid of the Tau you got this summer, you might ask. Because Tyranids have always been my first love in 40K. They were my first army under 2nd edition rules, when firing the venom cannon used the thudd gun template and it was so much fun to figure out where it was going. I had a Tyranid army when 3rd edition came out, made from the new plastic models. I regret getting rid of it. So now I want to remake a Tyranid force, I know - things will change when the new codex comes out, but I still would rather build a bug force.
Plus I hate painting tanks.
Anyway, here is what I have pretty much decided to look for and will post when I can repost in the 40K section tonight at 9:55 PM.
1 Tyranid codex
5 Tyranid battleforce boxes
3 zoanthropes
1 broodlord (not Space Hulk version)
2 hive tyrants
3 lictors
2 tyrant guard
3 raveners
Technically, I have 1 battleforce en route to me now. I will deal with 6 if I get 6. More bugs is not a bad thing, plus it gives me more fiddly bits to work with. This list above will let me field a bug horde, or if my opponents are of such that require it, a Nidzilla force.
