40k Starter Set Questions

Post by Bonefish7 »

Ok, it's been a long time since I have looked at these products and boy are they annoyingly expensive NOW and I thought it was bad back then. My question is, if 5 terminators cost 50 bucks, and a dreadnought costs 40 and a tactical squad costs 30, how the hell do they sell all that, PLUST a book AND orks for 75 smackers? What are the differences in the models because from the pictures it is not readily noticeable?

Most of them are single pose models. You have to attach to occasional weapon here and there. But, they are VERY nice mini's

its all about marketing. They take a hit on the starter set, knowing that people will buy it, then pay real money for their overpriced unit and vehicle boxed sets as well as their character blisters.

a small investment on their part, to bring in alot more money in the long run, basically.

oh no! One pose?! I have an army of Dark Angels with the very first plastic marines in it. They are ALL the same pose. I think I will just buy 2 boxed sets and sell the rest. Do people jack up the prices on the stuff in the starter set or are they nice and let it go at the value you would expect based on the seventy five dollar price tag?

A few months ago, that box was only like $60.

Terminators and dread usually go for about $15 each. The captain goes pretty cheap. Sometimes the captain won't even sell at .99 on ebay. I don't know about the orks.

Well.. one pose means a bit different now.. for example, the tactical squad consists of (I think) 6 different guys with different poses.. 1 Sarge, 1 Missile Launcher, 1 Flamer, and then bolters.. some duplication of poses in the bolter guys. There are 3 poses of Terminators, 1 Sarge, and 2 poses of SB and PF guys.. so they are NOT as static as you might think.
2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Yeah, I figured they were not AS stagnant based on the pictures. I would love to pose them all myself but $10 each for a plastic terminator? No freaking way I am buying that. Does the Dreadnought not have swappable weapons? I don't care about the pose, just want to make sure I can add a different weapon fairly easily.

You can reliably purchase the terminators for 5 for $15.. not sure where you are getting the 1 for $10, unless you inadvertently found the red ones from Space Hulk..

The dread does come with separate arms, so ANY of the regular Dread weapons will work.. you might need to glue or magnetize, to get them to stick, I think the connector pins on the AoBR dread are slimmer than the regular Dread.

I was referring to the $50 5-Terminator Box from Games Workshop, not the ones from the starter set. Sorry for the confusion. I will be buying exclusively stuff from the starter set, except for the landraider crusader and the freaking neophytes.

You can buy dread arms as bits on feebay.
You might need to work with 'em a little to get them to work, but it'll be cheaper than spending the money they want for the Dread box.

And even better, magnetize the arms on the dreads so you can switch out arms as needed.
