Games Workshop Kislev Bears

Post by Lochlannon »

I have 20 of these bears made by games workshop in 1987.. they are full on bears walking forward with a rope around their necks. Think it would be good for conversion but I have no idea of their worth? Any thoughts?

A picutre is worth a thousand views...

They sound pretty awesome. Especially since we have a member of our gaming group about to start a Dwarf riding Bears cavalry unit.

If they are that old they are probably actually the Bears that came with the old Wood Elf Animal Handlers.

As to value, you know how that goes. There are no rules for them in Wood Elves anymore and only Boyars can ride bears if I remember right. THat said they are cool models and you never know who's looking for what. Make a price and list a trade ad and see if anybody bites.

I looked through some old WDs from the late 80's but couldn't find them listed. The '89 catalog doesn't have prices. However as metal WFB regiments of 10 minis were priced at 7.50 pounds I would guess that the Beastmaster blisters sold for $3.50 give or take 50 cents. I have some old blisters from that time that are marked as low as $2.50 though and they also contain 2 models each.

That's the problem... mark up could be zero.
Could be mark DOWN.

It's all about who wants one. They're only worth what you can get for them.

Let's say I was converting a D&D character that rode a bear... I might be willing to pay $5 for one of these because it's perfect.
Now, maybe Joe's a collector and he knows these are worth $5 each, but are worth more with the handler.
He's not going to give you $5 each if that's the typical "market" value.

Your best bet is to decide what they're worth TO YOU and stick with that value for trades/sales.
List them as "make offer" and keep in mind what you'll accept for them. You never know... you might get more.

Eric is right. They are worth what the market says. Prices on older GW seem to me to have come down quite a bit over the last 5 years. I personally attribute that to GW losing a large portion of it's fanbase to other games, aging, recession, etc. For what it's worth I bought a set of three of the animals (no Wood Elf handlers included) out of package for $10 about a year and a half ago. I got a bear, a puma and a boar for that. Not saying that's what you should charge but just putting it out there.

ISTR the correct quote is that they are worth what the market will ... bear? ;>

They're probably neat figs for WFRP'ers, too.

Before GW discontinued their bitz service they sold for $5.00 each, then $7.50 each for about a month, and then back to $5.00.
If I owe you a reference, please let me know. I accidentally deleted my PMs.
