This just in:
Confirmation of reports from a trade manager at Games Workshop that the new Citadel Finecast (see this post at Games Workshop) will in fact be resin.

This means that all metal models are either discontinued or will eventually (or immediately) get replaced with the new resin models.

____________________________________________________

Citadel Finecast Announced: Games Workshop's quest to create the best quality miniatures in the world is about to take a huge step forward...

On 28th May Citadel Finecast miniatures launches to the world.

...Oh, and there is a price increase too:

Unfortunately with this comes a price increase, not just of the new resin miniatures but of a lot of other products as well, amounting to about a 20% price increase in all the products affected.

Not a large percentage of products are affected, but a lot of popular ones are, such as Assault on Black Reach and many battle forces and battalions.
...I know how threads like this go usually and de-volve into a couple camps, but can anyone tell me why I shouldn't be thinking that I should liquidate everything and get back into CCGs and D&D.

Thougths anyone?

Nope. I can't see any good reason not to.

From an economic standpoint, it does not make sense for GW to switch to a new casting method/material unless it improves their profit margin. With the prices of tin spiraling out of control the past few years this move was inevitable.

However, using the new material as an excuse for raising prices is just plain greedy. The new method must be cheaper to produce than the metal in order to be feasible. Otherwise, it's a very poor financial decision. Economics 101 (or in my case ECON 2010.)

Maybe I should send my textbook to the CEO of GW for a few pointers. <_<

The only textbook here is textbook GW. Pfft.
Falling sales? Lagging profits?
I know! Let's raise prices!

I'm about done. I'm going to knock a hole in my PayPal tonight and pick up some stuff I've been needing/wanting. After that, I think I'm done. I'll only buy new codices if I plan on playing the army and I'll buy used or non-gw models only.
I'd ditch them entirely, except that it's the only mini game my group plays.

I've got an xls copy of the prices. It's crazy.

Eric

BTW- Thread moved to Discussion area.

Should be in the Cafe then, rather than Grimdark, as this affects more than 40K.

Grr. You're right.
That's where I intended to put it.

Then, I got to thinking about how expensive my 40k stuff was going to get and lost track. LOL

Means I'll never start a second army. Marines forever!

I was gobbling up as many Sisters of Battle models as I could both here, locally, and on eBay. The price increases across the board will likely make the cost of starting a new army (when the revised book arrives) cost prohibitive.
40K is flourishing locally *crosses fingers*, so I'll stay in it with my Marines. Sisters will likely end up resold.

I'd hang on to them if you can. If & when their new codex comes out the majority of the line is supposed to be multi-part plastics. You wouldn't have much to buy to play them if you still had the metals.

True. Plus, I could always paint the ones I have up for Kill Team games. I'd heard the new SoB models were supposed to be in the next starter box set. Sisters versus Chaos Marines. Something about the Sisters sculpts not being very suited for multipart models due to the tabards and sleeves. Who knows?

Main reason for the change to Resin is recent changes to certain laws banning the sale of lead and pewter products in certain areas.

That makes no sense as they've been using lead-free metal for over a decade. It's all about the price of tin, which composes 80~90% of their "pewter".

Exuses GW used for price increase since RT:
1- prices are in UK pounds. It's the conversion rates. [even with store and warhouse in MD.]
2- US laws making toys from materials not containing lead. [even after law didn't pass]
3- new sculpts out of plastics cost more. new molds needed. can't use same ones as metal.
4- things cost more to make. we have have to raise prices.

I've been talking about this on another forum, and one of the points I mentioned. An item that was $50 in 2000 should cost $60 based on simple inflation. Are those once $90 boxed sets over $100 now? Yes. But they should be. Combine that with the fact that oil, a key ingredient in plasticmproduction as well as a necessary cost in transportation, is redonkulously expensive, and I think that a Land Raider going from fifty to sixty-six bucks is pretty reasonable.

As far as the argument of resin being cheaper, GW still announced what type of resin they're going to use, so we can't say with much certainty. Lastly, I've also heard from an FLGS owner that part of the problem is reduced production. I guess they simply can't crank out resin minis as fast as metal ones.
