Which one is current?? The first one I found for less than $20 and may pick up for fun reading. The 2nd one I found on the PP web site. Im guessing the first one is the old OOP book and is no longer valid.
Thanks,
Jason

But if you got $20 lying around and like fluff then book one is not a bad pick up.

thats my intent. at the price they want for it I can scope out WM, see what group I like, figure out some rules, etc etc. GW drops a error loaded ork book some time in the furture......goodbye orks. i would be sad to drop orks but i cant support GW and their lack or proof-reading time and time again.

There is a mercenaries section in the book. It isn't very big though so don't expect much from it as far as models / fluff goes. Best to probably get the fraction book if you want that. Mercenaries are cool though in the fact you can play some of them with other fractions to add an extra twist. Truly stick with their name as mercenaries.

Mercs were introduced as a real faction later, so they don't get much time in the first book (any version).
If you're going for outdated rules just for fluff, I'd suggest the first version of Warmachine: Prime (black & white): it's got some rather charming old art, and a lot more character than either of the more recent versions. I also think a lot of the Remix art is butt-ugly.

I will second (maybe third or fourth) the first book for the fluff!
