OMG these new tourney games are......

This is all just a matter of opinion. But i recently have played in a few local 40k tourneys using the Grand Tourney 2020 rules setting. ANd well GW
has really shot it self in the foot this time. This new rules setting has removed a foot off the end of the table and 4 inches on the sides. Add the
amount
of terrain and BAMM!! no vehicles bigger then a rhino are worth a damn. super heavies like baneblades are easy targets and no where to move to.
Land raiders are pretty much useless now. Because in everygame i have played in useing these NEW RULES. everything is now High Damage, HIGH AP.
ANd high Wounds. SPEED and mobility and a big pile of CHEESE.
FLUFF !!! Whats that??? Seems everyones army now mass produces POWERFISTS, Thunder Hammers, Storm Shields , Multimelta's, And the jump packs to deliver it all.
In the last 9 tourney events i have gone to. I have seen NO rhinos, NO landraiders, NO Guard. just the mass pruduction of the above items. Many armies dont even have a single vehicle.
Unless you play ORKS,
The current games look more like a HUGE game of Necromunda.
So i would imagine GW thought that by teaming up with the ITC side of it. they would have a better chance of selling more items. But i bet they didint take in the consideration of the lack of sales on all the vehicles. OOPS...
I wonder how many Baneblade kits, Landraider kits. and the PILES of rhinos and razorbacks kits are piling up.
And dont get me started on fliers. 200 point aircraft. One round of flight and BANG!! SH$%!! Im Dead!!. NO SALE!!!
I wonder how long it will be before GW realizes the mistake. Tries to put the cat back in the bag. Then drops a NEW EDITION to straighten it all up??
WAIT!! they are already planning Grand Tournies!!! this format will be at least another 2 years. My Bane Blades will now collect dust...

Yeah I left 40k because the gameplay style was moving in a direction that wasn't very enjoyable for me anymore.
Sad to see it continue to develop in that way.

I think 8e was the best edition of the game they'd put out, up until then.
They ruined it with codices, mortal wounds, excessive stratagems.
Then they brought out 9th.
They fixed a couple things about 8e.
Screwed up A LOT MORE.
Messed up much of the rules set by turning every game at home into a tournament style game (Secondaries, for example).
Still too many mortal wounds.
Still too many stratagems.
Too many BS ways to build SPAM and OP armies.
Now, I only play 40k to hang out with my friends (the ones whose SOLE game is 40k)... and I *just* hang out FAR MORE than i play 40k.

The worst part was the only way you could get 10 victory points is if your army was painted...
Seriously? lol

Hey.
Don't complain.
They're just encouraging you to FULLY participate in
The Hobby.
As we all know, you cannot fully participate in
The Hobby unless you partake of every part of
The Hobby process.
This includes fully assembling your GW models for
The Hobby, painting your GW models for
The Hobby, basing your GW models for
The Hobby, building an army list to dominate the entire tournament of
The Hobby, and positively reflecting all written and (especially) unwritten rules for
The Hobby. Anything less, and it's not
The Hobby; it's some aberration of
The Hobby, which is not enough!

Yet nothing prevents one from just spraying the models red white and blue, glueing some gravel they found on the side walk and showing up at a local tourney and skull dragging everyone in the way. 90-100 points a game goes along way even with a crappy painted army.
All in the name of THE HOBBY.
This is where GW needs to bring back the 20 Questions on painting and building of the army for the JUDGES to answer. simple yes or no questions,
But i have seen those tournies get slighted by TO's in favor of their "friends".
This has been by local judges many times over. situation was a Not so fully painted army won BEST PAINTED.
Because and i quote "Because he is the best painter here" . even though the army wasent fully painted . he got the award.

Yeah that's moronic.
It doesn't matter if Vince Venturella showed up, if his army isn't fully painted, he should never get rewarded so.
Bias has always been a negative detrimental factor in tournaments, which is why I stopped playing competitively long ago. That and watching "grown men" have fits and throw their models...
Sadly, the community (up here in Ontario, anyways) of tournament players is a smaller one, so most everyone knows everyone (the ones that go to every tournament, that is).
Just before Covid hit and forced us into an eternal lockdown (we are still under lockdown here in Ontario), I was going to go to a tournament. Like I said, I stopped going many moons ago, but the people I would be going with were cool so I thought sure why not. 40k, teams. I purchased so much that year to build and paint for the tournament!
And then two weeks before the tournament, the big GW bi-yearly FAQ came out and 3 of our 5 members were affected negatively by it (one member's list was made illegal because of it) on top of members from other teams, however, the ones that benefited the most from the FAQ voiced their opinion and managed to actually have a vote be called to use it. Those who it helped voted yes (obviously), those who it did not affect voted that they did not care (or they voted yes because they knew people who wanted it). There was two or three teams (including us) that voted no, as it was simply unfair to have people redo their lists (some having to rewrite the entire thing and/or purchase new models and have them painted up) so close to the tournament.
Well, the vote was passed and the FAQ was made legal for the tournament.
Our team ended up dropping out because of it. It was simply too unfair to force changes on people so close to the tournament. Especially when models had to be purchased and painted, and not everyone has time to paint that close to the tournament (painted armies were enforced).
Tournament still happened, but more chaos ensued. From the ones that went, they pretty much said it was a *edit* show. Favouritism, lies, cheating (one guy brought way over max points in models and his captain even KNEW about it), etc. It soured my taste of the competitive play once again (not that it matters right now with lockdowns lol).
Point is, the bias in the competitive environment will always rise above fair play. It's why morons like Alex Harrison and Tj Lanigan will cheat, even during televised events with cameras fixated on them, to get ahead. Even in a smaller community like the one up here in Ontario, you will see it show face. It has been called out many times, but the same players keep showing up and no one does anything.

WOW. It sounds like a made for TV event up there.
Sorry you guys are still on Lock Down. I guess Canadian Gvt isent as cool as people down here make it out to be. Im in Louisiana; things are opening up every week.
This sounds alot like why i quit going to Tournies at Owl Con years ago. Last minute entries to a Warhammer Fantasy tournie. I play a guy first turn . declared myself the winner due to the list being ILLEGAL. But the judge sided with him because since he was last minute entry and they didnt get a chance to review his army list. (even though these guys were locals) And from there you can figure who won the tournie. I left the tournie and never went back.
Many years ago at the first Dallas GW Grand Tournie. An Illegal list appeared. Eldar useing Kroot mercs. Kroot Mercs were not allowed in the tournie per GW rules. BUT the guy with the list was a local politician. The person he played against complained to the judges, and so did the next guy. Judges said they would handle it. They never did. The person in question won over all. And his army was later show cased in the White Dwarf. All in the name of politics.
So i feel with you when judges slight rules to help their friends.

Well it' more just Ontario and BC.
Canada's total population is 37.59 million, with Ontario holding 14.57 million of it. The dense populated cities are the concern, so the Ontario provincial government keeps extending our lockdown. Ontario is a big province, but the entire province must stay in lockdown otherwise the city folk flood the small towns and then it spreads just the same.
We have started rolling out vaccinations to GenPop so the government says once we hit 70% of Ontario having at least 1 vaccine shot and 25% having the 2nd, we can fully open again.
It's a slow process.
I haven't been able to roll dice in so long lol.

This makes me glad I sold my 40k army and moved to Warmachine/Hordes. There are great things about 40k, and problems with Warmachine. But Warmachine is a good competitive tournament game.

We had Warmahordes here for a while. I even still own a few armies worth of stuff. Khador, menoth, mercs and troll bloods. But the game just up and died here. I was leaning into it more and more until the drop off. No idea why it dropped off. And i had just finish building up my troll bloods to competive lvl. Once it died i sold off my books and cards and kept my minis. Just incase. The guys that I know were hard core into it total sold off all thier stuff.
So 40k is where i will be until the end.

We had warmahordes up here too. It blew up HUGE, especially in the cities.
And then one day it died. Like.. bad.
You can't GIVE away a waramhorde army now, let alone trade it for anything.
Friend of mine has about 2k USD worth of warmahordes and he couldn't even trade it for a start collecting warhammer box. It's THAT dead up here.

Yeah, a lot of players left at the start of 3rd Ed. The game now is either the best it’s ever been, or the worst. It really depends on one’s point of view. Also, I think GW really stepped up their quality.

Yes, the over all quality of GW models has improved over the years. But the quality of the rules still leaves much for improvement. As i once said. If GW spent as much time reviewing the codexs and rules books as they do spending time on who to sue next. Well maybe the games would flow better . Nothing burns my butt more then spending 50.00 for a rules book, then another 50.00 for a Codex, then another 35.00 for a suppliment codex. Only to have it FAQed weeks later. Plus the fact that the prices of the game is getting out of hand. Again like I once stated. Its amazing how much GW/ Forge world charges for a model that someone is able to reproduce in his or her garage with an over the counter resin kits and make models for dollars when GW charges 100s of dollars.
But I think (IMO) these current rules systems for the the Grand Tourney may have bitten them in the butt. I wonder what the sales charts are showing on Super heavy vehicles like Baneblades and such. Down to Land Raiders. Im sure the sales predictions are WAY off. But overall sales on things like attack bikes and anything packing power fists and jump packs jumped off the charts. GW is going to have piles of unsold kits piling up in the warehouses. GW will have to retool molds to keep up with demand for jump troops and attack bikes. Which will eat into profits. OOPS.
And to see they tried going in the direction of trying to sell to smaller kids and such. I wonder how a parent reacted when lil Timmy asked mommy and daddy for a full 2000 points army to get involved in the local 40k gaming circles. and when lil Timmy gave them the list from the GW site. the parent eyes bugged out. "I thought you said this was a 2000 point army?? Not a $2000.00 dollar army!!!"
Im just saying.

I find that the guys who left GW and wrote their own game systems; right the best rules. Or maybe they have better proofreaders and co-writers.
