Re: What MMO's do people play?
What killed WAR? At first it seemed great... I heard a lot of great things about it and WoW learned a lot from it. What went wrong? Whats wrong with it?

it's entire end game and most of te whole game is pvp.
the toons are sp 'balanced' that basiclly, they're mirrors of each other.
take the black orc and te dwarven slayer. not only are they the same thing, the special attacks and moves are the exact same but with different names. both get them at the same time/levels.
it's a rehash of daoc, but using only 2 realms. the toons are mostly mirros of each other and it's geared towards pure realm based pvp..if you get bored of that quicly, then your done.

They are not exact mirrors. They have, on each side, similar play slots.
This can be seen in the Witch Elf and the counterpart Witch Hunter. The Elf is an in your face stealth fighter with little/no ranged ability available. They rely on getting that first hit to really knock you down.
The Witch hunters however has some ranged ability and is not geared towards the initial hit, rather the mid fight/ending hits with the judgements.
There are some classes that have nearly identical opposites and there are classes that have no real opposite on the other side.
For example White Lion and the squig hunter, they are both the "beastmaster class" however the Squig hunter is a ranged class (similar to the hunters in WoW) where the White lion is a melee class that in meant to be in your face. Same "occupational slots" different play styles with different abilities. In reality it is no different than any other MMORPG out there (in WoW a Horde hunter is no Different than an Alliance hunter, WAR is just adding a bit more flavor with each sides "hunter" getting a nearly identical skill that is tweeked more towards that particular side)
They are opposites, however they are not all mirrors.
To me it wasn't the execution, they made no false claims that is was not a realm vs realm war, even if it was a copy of DAoC. What killed it for me was the fact that actual game play was NOT RvR rather it was simply people queing up for the battlegrounds and not going after the keeps/realm objectives. People went to this game looking for a WoW killer and played it the same way that you would play EQ or WoW, not going into the game as if you are playing part of an actual war between the sides. The only Reason I left is becuase everyone I knew left and I was getting fed up not being able to participate in the war thanks to everyone queing up for battlegrounds instead. Then again I only made it to the 3rd tier before everyone else I knew left.

the black orc and the dwarven slayer are exact mirrors of each other. I ran both. I tried all of the classes, but they were too much like each other.
the rest are very similiar.
what killed daoc was the constant change to balance the classes from realm to realm.
by copying the powers/abiilities and attacks i WO, they made sure they didn't have that problem.

I played nearly every class also. Which is why I made the mention that it is no different than an alliance hunter and a Horde Hunter, or more Specifically a Blood Elf hunter and a Dwarven Hunter in World of Warcraft.
While those two specific classes that you mentioned may have been mirrors, most of the other classes played different than thier counterpart. Even though they occupied the "mirror/opposite" slot as in the example I gave previously.
I played a Sorcereess until the third tier, I also played a Bright Wizard. Both offer the same basic "strengthen/backlash" mechanic on their spells, the spell library and effects were completely different. The DE Sorceress has NOTHING like blood boil, which was the bane of every one in the PvP realm. On the other hand the Bright wizard did not have as effective area effect or debilitating spells. While each class offered the same basic slot of "the nuker" they each played different.
I understand where you are comming from kturock, however I'm able to give several counter examples to your "they all play exactly the same" as you can only give the one. I played for a long time as well. I was in the Beta, I played the Black Guard before they were pulled, and was excited when they were put back in. Even though the Black guard and Iron breaker run via a similar mechanic, they accumulate Hate/Grudges differently and expend them differently. An Iron breakers skills are centered along the defensive of self and party memebers, while a Black Guard are more centered on the offensive with some defensive abilities.

On Topic:
I just got back into Ryzom. Its a great mechanic with interesting weather patterns, changing seasons and all the conventional trimmings. Its at ryzom.com I believe.
On WAR:
I had a great time playing WAR until I started going after castles and such. I played a white lion (good guy side) and we always had success capturing forts... for about 2 minutes. The bad guy side outnumbered us in every assault by at least 2 to 1, more often it was 3 or 4 to 1. The instanced battles were actually more fun because the numbers were usually dead even.
