Terrain I built

Post by Xoan »

This thread is designed to show projects I have done for this game, I will link to the albums the miniatures are pulled from in the first post, and then link to the picture directly below as I go. I am open to discussion here, but please understand that some people may only want a cheaper painting level like my 3up or my Table Top. I am posting all of that work here too, so I can show a body of work for those who want to see how I paint.

Thanks in Advance
Clark

With this project the client wanted 3 pieces of terrain, but was very open to artistic license, and since it was post-apoc terrain I thought I would make 6 pieces and let them pick from what was there. I put this terrain about 15 to 30 years after the main conflict, structures are still easy to pick out, but they are starting to be overgrown. Top floors open to the weather are starting to have plants grown in areas that collect dirt, and the whole ground floor of each building has the sign of major flooding. With river like mud throughout the the whole first floor area, and plants have started to grow even where it is hard on top of piles of debris.

I consider this to be my Above Table Top level, and I have to say it looks pretty stunning on the table with miniatures around it.

I think the cork gives the walls an interesting look. I can't help but wonder, though... isn't cork substantially more expensive than foamcore? Why choose cork over foamcore?

I have foam core too, but I was going for a crumbling look, and it was more of an text than anything. Also the foam core I have is 1 and 1/2 inch or 1 inch thick. I could of cut it in half I guess and I might in the future. I have a bunch of tools for foam core as well. The cork board was something I bought a while back and was going to use on my Nids, but that sort of fell through when their codex came out. heh

I still have 6 square feet of that cork though lol

BTW the cork is nearly exactly 4 times the cost of 1 inch foam core.

I am glad you liked it though!

Are we talking about the same thing?
I've never heard of foam core that thick. Typically, it's like 1/8" or something.

Are you talking about insulation foam, like you'd buy at Home Depot, or the foam board with paper on both sides tht you'd buy at Walmart and use for things like art or school projects?

That said, the cork achieves the "crumbled" look nicely.

Your are correct, I am not using the right wording. lol There is the pink or blue foam that is used in construction which is what I was meaning to say, and there is foam core used in art projects as well in classes where they display structures like a 3d design class. I was talking about the pink foam, and my comparison was to that too.

One of the things I thought about doing with a future project if I do more detail is a stucco wall look with this crumbling behind it. Much like the roam walls after the Greek mosiac's started to crack, but their influence continued. They did not build with the same materials, so basically have two rows of smooth stone with rubble used as filler, and a crumbling mosiac on the inside of the wall and a stucco on the outside where the weather would be more harsh. However, I would chip the outer layers (mosiac and the stucco), to show the crumbling wall behind it. That would be more of a fantasy setting.

In a modern setting I could see wall paper over a crumbling concrete wall on the inside, and some combination of a concrete, a half brick half concrete or stucco chipped to show the concrete behind it theme. I am still playing with ideas, and I left this project with more questions and ideas, than I started with. :)

Anyways, thanks for thoughts I am glad you liked it.

I really like the effect that cork gives--I can see doing a mixed media building with it.

I think the terrain looks great with the cork board for a post apocalyptic setting.

Very nice terrain! The cork gives it an excellent look!

Thank you to everyone who likes it, and even those who thought I could have done it different. Constructive criticism is always important too. It helps keep me objective with my work.

I am sure more people will want some terrain built, and I will have more pictures to put up when that happens
