What do folks think about Warcaster?

Post by gardenninja »

I was wondering what people here think about the most recent Privateer Press game on Kickstarter

Warcaster Neo Mechanika

Things I find interesting:

- No army deployment at the beginning of the game- everything gets summoned onto the board through gates from turn to turn
- No attrition- destroyed units can be redeployed the next time you're summoning units onto the table.
- Privateer Press are planning to run another Kickstarter for this game every time they release a new wave (but they aren't moving toward this model with their other games).
- These minis would feel at home among Infinity or Sedition Wars

Is that a bad thing?
I thought they were when i first saw them.

Any gameplay notes so i don't have to read them.

Igougo is already a big turnoff though.

Not bad, no. But I would have hoped something reinvented or new, although I guess everything is a clone of something these days.

Igougo is already a big turnoff though.

Alternating activation.

Objective based victory in a set number of turns (set by the scenario)

Variable board size (larger games play on 4x4, smaller games play on smaller board)

Dynamic deployment through portals onto the board (and dead units can come back as reinforcments). You pay for deploying units as you go, so you don't necessarily have a point limit for your force (there is a set number of units you can bring).

Monpoc style dice

Warjacks have lots of options for their gear loadouts

No central Warcaster figure- the 'warcaster' is a general not on site. You create a deck of cards to represent her effects on the battle.

Yeah- the minis looked very similar to Infinity to me, but the game rules seem more original and interesting.

The minis don't do much for me, though the rules seem to contain some interesting ideas. The marriage of minis and a card deck and specialty dice feels a little gamey to me. Viability via kickstarter is a turnoff.

I hope it works for them, but it doesn't look like enough to bring my group back into the fold.
My Rules:

1) I accept paypal. Offers good for 24 hours.

2) My "$$ XYZ shipped" lot costs are only valid for continental United States. HI/AK and international shipping costs will be born by buyer. This will be reiterated in PM.

3) I only ship on Saturdays.

4) Trades: lower rating sends first. Sales: buyer pays first.

5) Don't waste either of our time, Read the Whole Ad.

- I really like the idea of minis and pre-built decks. I'm not totally sold on the specialty dice, but they seem to be common in newer tabletop minis games (Runebound, Fallout/Elder Scrolls and Crisis Protocol. And Monpoc).

- The availability through Kickstarter isn't complete. They're still doing normal retail for anyone who wants to buy them that way. They've given a pretty decent explanation.

From what I can tell, the flood of new games has overwhelmed Distributors such that they have to be more choosy about what they stock. So they stock their best staples (Magic, D&D, Asmodee games, etc). This means that a lot of Privateer Press stuff is hard to get a hold on even if your LGS wants to order it in- even though Privateer Press has plenty of them in their warehouse.

To me, this means that CMON is never going to stop using Kickstarter- and they shouldn't.

- As for this game, I kind of think that a tabletop miniatures game needs to be unique and awesome in three main categories in order to have a chance at becoming a staple. They need awesome and unique minis, fluff and rules.

The rules definitely interest me. I haven't seen enough of the fluff yet to be sure. The biggest drawback of this game is that the current minis would look too much at home in Infinity. I rather hope that their newer factions are more distinct.
