Hyperion...

Post by Xoan »

This is the second part of the Gargantuan and technically the Colossals if I were to use the proper name for them. heh Two sides of the same coin though. heh

With this model I was more aggressive with objects within the base that are good sized, and a raised surface built up around it. In this case it was a 1/2 piece of pipe, and a crest of earth, when it is all done I see having static grass built up around the pipe and different parts of the earth itself. Like all of the other larger models I build on artificial surfaces I pin them to something solid in this case a washer that has layers of glue and sand on both sides of it. I expect that this will take a little more than 24 hours to completely dry, lol, but it will be worth it when it is done.

I plan to start painting on this on Friday, and work on it all this weekend.

Though the right foot is up in the air some it is also pinned to the base. I have cut a channel in the foot, and then made an S shaped pin with 90 degree angles to lock it down to the base and to the washer below his foot. I am using the washers that work with nails I believe, it has a 16 penny nail sized hole in the middle, but the outer edge is 1 inch round. :)

Ok after making some small changes here and there and getting distracted, here is the Hyperion I hope you like it.

The client was wanting to go with a very clean look, like it has been taken care of, but he wanted it to look like it was moving and not on the show room floor. To show that I went with mud and no battle damage.

The oil spill on the front of the model was a nice touch imo that larger bases allow. If I was doing a whole army of models like this, I could see the larger model having the reason why the battle field is an oil-slick and the rest of the models in that slick.

Awesome, I've never been able to get white paint to work for me, it always goes on streaky no matter what I do. Have any tips/self experiences your willing to share?

I understand that totally.

Have you ever heard that putting a wash on a model after you blend two or more colors helps smoothing the transitions between the colors. It is true, and I did that here too, but I used a white wash made from the same color of white that I painted the model. It basically smooths those colors out so they are harder to see. You want to be careful to avoid pooling of the paint, and layers are super thin so you want to seal it more than once for sure. Doing it that way creates a table time of 40 minutes or so between layers, and from doing other things, so it is much slower but effective.

Clark
PS. I have two more large models I am working on currently one is a Judicator and the other is a Reaver Titan I will start threads on them when I am farther a long.

awesome suggestions, I'll have to be more patient with white lol
I am really interested in seeing the Reaver Titan, I think it's an awesome model. Which pattern are you painting, Chaos or Mars?

What kind of paint are you using? It matters.

As xoan said; thinner layers.

I use Vallejo paint and have Vallejo thinner. About 1 drop thinner to 3 or 4 drops of paint, and it's thin enough to go on without streaks, but not so thin as to pool up and/or be translucent. Depending on your preferences, you could even add more paint to thinner in the ratio. I usually do 1:5 thinner to paint.

That is totally correct about each brand having a stronger color or a weaker one. I personally was using Skull White from GW, but I like Vallejo a lot, but I have left over paints from when this was a hobby and those I bought for a lower price. I thinned it with a cheap floor polish and water until it was about as thick as skim milk. I would add the floor polish to the water since that is so little compared to the water you want to use. It is really there to break the surface tension of the water.

I tried skull white from GW and hate it, I tried some other brand (from some paint shop) but I think it's getting it to the ratio that is needed. I'll pick up some other brands and try those too, never know it could just be the skull white I have too lol I find some GW paints are just garbage going on :(

IMO, GW has a GREAT range of colors. Some of their colors are just not made by anyone else that is easily available...
...except Vallejo. : )

For *ANY* GW color I want, I go to the Vallejo Game Color line. Their paints are exact copies of GW paints, but with different -though similar- names.
I like the Vallejo Model Air line for brush painting with metallics, actually. too.

Using GW paints can be your issue, especially if you're painting straight from the pot. In my experience, they have ALWAYS needed thinning. Plus their pigmentation isn't as heavy as Vallejo. So, you can't thin them as much & still get good coverage.

Yeah I usually thin them with water, maybe I should try thinning them with something else

I would consider a few things like if it is a pure acrylic, or does it have real metal flakes in it like VMA metallics. In all of these cases you want to do a blend of suggested product water or what ever, then a thinner and maybe a paint <not smart>. The paint <not smart> slows down how fast paint drys and that can be very helpful with wet blends for example, and very bad for a dry brush... so it is not really a one situation fits all. heh

A Wet Pallet is totally worth it though regardless of what you do, and they are basically free to any gamer. Take one of your Privateer Press or GW miniature plastic packets and put some foam or paper towels in and keep them moist so they can hold the paint without drying. If they clasp it is a bonus, with that you can literally keep a blend of paint for days at a time with a little care.
