I am not artistic. How do you design your campaign maps and set up your battlefields?

Let's say, I want to do a land campaign that does not have a published game in print.

A bit more specificity might be helpful but at the least, I like the Woodland Scenics table mats:

They wear well and add a consistent base to build from assuming you are using small hills and flat land....
