Space marine army?

Post by CMSheats »

Hello all, recently I traded A bunch of LOTR for SM. So I have a TON coming. What I need to know is, what does a normal SM army consist of? I am new to 40k and just need some advice on the matter. Thanks

Generally for a competitive SM army you are going to need at least:
4 rhinos with tac squads with Melta MMelta
1 5man TH SS termy squad in a land raider
1 10 man Sternguard in droppod with atr least 4 Combi meltas
2 Dreds possibly in Drop pods
Some kind of hero dude and a librarian

I would argue that, while this is a nice list, that a lot of it is not necessary to be competitive. Termies in a Land Raider are for sure not necessary, MMelta in the Tac squads, Drop Pod Sternguard, Librarian.

However, this is a very nice list, and would be pretty tough to take on. 3 to 4 tactical squads in Rhinos is a for sure thing / necessary as much as possible. Dreads are also very good for their points, and it never hurts to take 2.

OK thanks for the help. Also should I change my army list out depending on what race I am fighting?

You also need to ask yourself what type of army you want. An army has to work for the person commanding it,their tastes way of doing things ect.
Do you want a theme or just ubber cheese ? something thats fun and tough ?

Are you aggressive aka lots of hth or do you like gun lines?

Run what feels right for you

I personally like running 4 20man marines squads, and assualt troops and bikes

Black Templar-24,000+
Imperial Guard
Gaunts Ghost -2,000
Victoria's Own 33rd of Foot-2,000
Sisters of battle-2,500
Loyal Chaos Marines-2,000
Legio I Italica-8.000

Bretonnians 3,000plus

From what I have done with 40k, I like the aggressive side of things better. So like you were saying, would tons of marines and bikes be a good army for that?

QFT.

If I was playing Marines, I would have a Master of the Forge (with conversion beamer) and 6 Dreadnoughts all in Drop Pods, Scout Squads and some filler... Competitive? Probably not. Fun as all heck? You bet.

Remember Drop Pods though as they create insta-terrain and can help you shape the battlefield the way you want.

Haha, well I'm not going to any competitions so maybe I will try that. I didn't think about the drop pods adding to the terrain. Thats a real smart idea. Thanks Oaf. BTW I like your avatar. :)
